AI visibility is whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini name your business when a buyer asks them for a recommendation. It is also called GEO, for generative engine optimisation.
This guide explains what it covers, how it differs from SEO, and how to know where you stand.
The Short Answer
Ask an AI assistant “which suppliers can machine titanium parts to tight tolerances in Europe?” and you get a written answer that names a few companies, often with links to their pages.
If your business is one of those names, you are visible for that question.
If it is not, the buyer may never hear of you: there is no second page of results to scroll through.
Why It Matters Now
Buyers increasingly start their research by asking an assistant instead of typing keywords into a search engine. The assistant does the comparison for them and hands back a short list. For B2B companies, where a buyer often builds a shortlist before contacting anyone, being on that list early matters more than ever.
The shift also changes what “ranking” means. A search engine shows ten links and lets the buyer choose. An assistant chooses for the buyer and explains why. The question is no longer only “am I on page one?” but “am I in the answer?”.
AI Visibility vs SEO
The two overlap, but they are not the same game.
| Criterion | ||
|---|---|---|
| What you compete for | A position in a list of links | A place in a written answer |
| How many winners | Ten links per page, several pages | Usually a handful of names |
| Stability | Rankings move slowly | Answers can change from one run to the next |
| What helps | Relevance, links, technical health | The same basics, plus clear identity, direct answers, proof and third-party mentions |
Good SEO helps: assistants with web search use search indexes to find pages. But a page can rank well and still be ignored by the assistant if it never answers the question directly, or if nothing on it proves the claims it makes.
Cited vs Mentioned
There are two ways to appear in an answer.
You are cited when the assistant gives one of your pages as a source, usually with a link.
You are mentioned when your name appears in the text without a link.
Both count, but a citation is stronger: it sends the buyer to your site and shows that the assistant relied on your content.
How to Measure It
Checking one question once in ChatGPT tells you little, because answers vary. A useful measurement has four ingredients:
- The Right QuestionsThe ones your buyers actually ask, in their language, not your brand name alone.
- Several EnginesChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini do not search the same way and do not name the same businesses.
- RepetitionAsking each question several times shows whether a citation is a habit or a fluke.
- TimeTracking the same questions week after week shows whether you are gaining ground or losing it, and to whom.
Our methodology page explains how Thirdslot applies these principles.
Where to Start
- List ten to twenty questions a buyer would ask before choosing a supplier like you.
- See who the assistants name for those questions today, and what pages they cite.
- Fix the basics that make your site easy to read and quote: our AI visibility checklist covers them one by one.
Or let us do the first step for you: the free audit runs 12 buyer questions on three engines and shows who is named, in a few minutes.
